Abstract
Objectives: The purposes of this study were (1) to develop smile measurements for lateral and oblique view photos to help in Orthodontic analysis and treatment planning, (2) to quantitatively evaluate smile characteristics among different types of malocclusion using frontal, lateral, and oblique view photos, and (3) to identify the cephalometric factors affecting smile measurements.
Material and methods: The participants were patients who have come to the Orthodontic department of Taipei Medical University hospital from 2014 to 2017. The participants who met the inclusion criteria were divided into 3 group according to Angle’s classification of malocclusion. 13 cephalometric variables were used for the cephalometric analysis. The pretreatment smiling photographs were taken using the digital camera based on the standard procedure in the orthodontic department. Frontal, lateral, and oblique smiling view photographs were used in this study. 28 smile variables were measured for the smile analysis.
Results: The participants who reached the criteria comprised 390 patients (287 females and 103 males) mean age of 24.5±7.6. All cephalometric variables differed significantly among 3 groups. Except the maxillary teeth exposure number, maxillary teeth width, buccal corridor, and lip thickness ratio, all smile variables differed significantly. Regression analysis showed that smile characteristics had significant correlation with some cephalometric measurements.
Conclusions: Smile pattern on frontal, lateral and oblique views might be affected by different Angle’s classifications of malocclusion. There were significant correlations between cephalometric and smile measurements.
Clinical application: According to the results of the study, it can be suggested that, in the orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. Aside from frontal smiling view photo, lateral and oblique smiling view photos should be included in the data collection for the comprehensive smile analysis.
