Abstract
Title of Thesis: Predictors of Resilience among Adolescent Survivors of a Volcanic Eruption: A Path Analysis
Institution: School of Nursing, Taipei Medical University
Author: Okki Dhona Laksmita
Thesis Advisor: Pi-Chen Chang, Associate Professor, PhD, RN.
Background: It is important to identify the adolescent disaster survivors’ resilience and its predictors in the long-term impact following disaster, that can be useful in the prevention of negative outcomes and enhancement of positive outcomes.
Purpose: The study was to investigate a theoretical model of risk factors (Posttraumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD symptoms and defensive coping) and protective factors (courageous coping and social support) to predict resilience among adolescent disaster survivors.
Methods: In this cross-sectional study design, 545 adolescents aged 12-18 years old from 7 schools in a post-volcanic eruption area in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, were recruited. A path analysis was used to test the relationships between the variables.
Results: The hypothesized model was therefore retained, indicating empirical support for the theoretical model. However, one of seven path coefficients was found to have insignificant correlation: PTSD symptoms and resilience (ß = -0.002, p > 0.05).
Conclusions:
Overall, the findings indicated the predictive roles of risk (PTSD symptoms and defensive coping) and protective (courageous coping and social support) factors in adolescent disaster survivors’ resilience.
Keywords: PTSD symptoms, coping, social support, resilience, adolescent disaster survivors
