Abstract
According to the statistics of Fire Protection Annual Report in R.O.C., the number of casualties among firefighters is about 100 to 150 per year in recent years (Fire Department of the Ministry of the Interior, 2019). Casualties may be caused at the scene of disaster relief, on the way to work, or even during team training. Those risks exist in each part of the incidents, and firefighters must judge and take corresponding measures by themselves. However, such risk-taking behaviors are both diverse and uncertain, which often results in firefighters being unable to make correct judgments. As a result, injuries have occurred, and regrets have occurred.
This study takes psychology as a starting point to explore the relationship between economic decision-making strategies and firefighters' work injuries by exploring the potential impulses of different personality traits when faced with different risks and using lottery choice task to simulate the response to events. The results showed that the novelty seeking (NS) was correlated with harm avoidance (HA) in the firefighting group. In the economic decision-making strategy game data, it is divided into high-risk group and low-risk group, and the average coefficient of variation (CV) value of the high-risk group in the game (average risk value, the higher the risk, the higher the risk) is positively correlated with the total number of career injuries ( r=0.235, p=0.018), indicating that the decision-making risk index in the game can significantly predict the total number of career injuries, and participants who take higher-risk decisions in the game have more career-related injuries. While as low-risk decision makers, those who chose more high-risk questions in the game had fewer career injuries (r=-0.249, p=0.041).
The results may be influenced by the brain using a common neural network in risk assessment and decision-making. Whether it is assessing the risk in economic decision-making or the risk of environmental physical threats, overlapping neuropsychological mechanisms will be used, which will enable development. Economic decision-making risk indicators help prevent or control the potential for firefighters to be injured on the job.
