Emergency nurses should have the ability to consider the health literacy of older patients. Good health literacy can reduce patient anxiety and improve satisfaction during medical visits. This study aims to explore the correlation between emergency nurses’ ability to consider older patients’ health literacy, their attitudes towards the elderly, and their communication behaviors. It also examines the mediating effect of the ability to consider older patients’ health literacy on the relationship between attitudes towards the elderly and communication behaviors. This cross-sectional study targets current or former full-time emergency nurses with more than six months of experience. A convenience sampling method was used to distribute online questionnaires via social media platforms. Data were collected using a structured self-administered questionnaire, which included personal background variables, the ability to consider older patients’ health literacy, attitudes towards the elderly, and communication behaviors. Statistical analyses included descriptive statistics, independent samples t-tests, one-way ANOVA, and linear regression analysis. A total of 396 valid questionnaires were analyzed. The results showed significant differences in the ability to consider older patients’ health literacy based on gender, education level, age, hospital grade, and whether the nurse had received geriatric care training. Attitudes towards the elderly had a significant positive impact on communication behaviors, with a predictive power of 16%. The ability to consider older patients’ health literacy partially mediated the effect of attitudes towards the elderly on communication behaviors, increasing the predictive power to 40%. This study highlights the importance of emergency nurses’ ability to consider the health literacy of older patients. It suggests that providing relevant education and training can effectively improve emergency nurses’ attitudes towards older patients and their communication skills. This, in turn, will enhance the consideration of older patients’ health literacy, thereby improving the quality and satisfaction of emergency nursing services.
