Abstract
Title: Knowledge, attitudes and perceptions regarding HIV/AIDS among Indonesian migrant
workers in Taiwan
Background: One of the important and crucial public health issues facing governments and civil
societies in the world most is The Human Immunodeficiency Virus infection (HIV) and Acquired
Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) epidemic. Good knowledge, attitudes and perceptions of
HIV prevention are essential to prevent the disease from spreading also in order not to acquire HIV
infection. It is important to examine the HIV knowledge, attitudes and perceptions among migrant
workers in order to increase prevention regarding HIV/AIDS.
Objective: The aim of this study to assess the knowledge, attitudes and perceptions level regarding
HIV/AIDS among Indonesian migrant worker in Taiwan. Also to investigate the correlation between
socio demographic characteristic (age, gender, marital status, residency in Taiwan, education level,
occupation and religion) regarding knowledge, attitudes, perception of HIV/AIDS among Indonesia
migrant workers in Taiwan.
Methods: This cross-sectional survey was analyzed using SPSS. Univariate analysis to explain and
descript the characteristic of each variable. In this analysis distributes and the frequency and
percentage of each variable. Bivariate to know a significant association between independent
variable and dependent variable. A Chi-square test used for categorical variables. Also Multiple
regression to examine how independent variables are related to dependent variables.
Result: The total of respondents are 200 Indonesian migrant workers in Taiwan. Most of respondent
(78.0 % were female and education in Senior High School were (70.1 %). General knowledge of
HIV/AIDS was good (69.5%), but misconceptions and erroneous beliefs were common. 76.5 % of
them thought that all body fluids can transmit HIV and 60.0 % thought that sharing razors,
toothbrushes can transmit HIV. There was significant association between education level regarding
knowledge and attitudes level. Also there were association between knowledge regarding attitudes
and perceptions level.
