Abstract
Background: Performance measurement in the healthcare system is becoming an increasingly popular study topic around the world. Performance measuring systems are crucial in the establishment of firm strategy and in determining if organizational goals have been fulfilled. The fundamental goal of this research is to investigate the effects of efficiency in of California hospitals.
Design: We use multiple regression analysis to examine the relationship between the efficiency measures and profitability. Subjects: The study population are the hospitals in California State, United States. The data resources we used from financial performance annual financial data of California Health and Human Services (CHHS) open data set.
Method: We use multiple regression analysis to examine the relationship between the efficiency measures and profitability. We make the usual assumption that the Hospital Performance function to examine effect of the efficiency measures on profitability are following the methodology of Model: HP1,t+1= œ+ß1Oit+ ß2Eit +μ. Where the dependent variable of hospital profitability is the profitability that measured by total margin and operating margin of the hospital. The independent variables were efficiency, which was measured as full-time equivalent employees per occupied bed (FTE/bed), work hours per adjusted patient day (WH/APD), and occupancy rate. The study population are the hospitals in California State, United States. The data resources we used from financial performance annual financial data of California Health and Human Services (CHHS) open data set.
Keywords: Hospital profitability, Hospital performance, quality of care
