Abstract
Abstract
The present research was divided into two parts; the first part of this study consisted of a discourse analysis of a nano-functionalized stainless steel, the second part consisted of showing the biocompatibility of nanosilver containing diamond-like carbon films.
Part I
In the present study, the plasma-nitrided austenitic stainless steel was prepared using a microwave system. The nitride layers were characterized via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy and a Vickers microhardness tester. The effects of plasma nitriding on the compatibility of blood with the austenitic stainless steel were also investigated. Based on the XRD and TEM observations, it was inferred that a single γN phase formed in response to the plasma nitriding processes at 450 °C. The results demonstrated that the hardness of austenitic stainless steel could be enhanced by plasma nitriding owing to formation of the γN phase. A clotting test and a platelet adhesion test also demonstrated that the nitride layer had excellent anticoagulant properties.

Part II
Nanosilver containing diamond-like carbon films with different silver fractions were synthesized by radio frequency magnetron sputtering using single silver target in an atmosphere of Ar/CH4 mixture. The nanocrystalline silver clusters spontaneously segregated within an amorphous diamond-like carbon matrix. The amorphous-to-crystalline phase transformation resulted in both the surface hardness and electrical resistivity of composite films decrease with the increase of the silver cluster size. The enlarged cluster size also increases the film surface roughness and water contact angle. All the films show an anti-bacterium rate of over 93%, which evidences the effectiveness for applying this composite film for anti-bacterium surface treatment.
Part III
A hybrid technique combining the radio-frequency magnetron sputtering of silicon and the plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition of hydrogenated carbon was developed to synthesize silicon-incorporating diamond-like carbon films. Plasma power was supplied at different levels to a silicon electrode in an Ar/CH4 atmosphere to prepare films having different Si contents. The effects of the plasma power level on the compositions and microstructures of the deposited film were investigated. The Si contents and deposition rates of the films increased with the plasma power. All the films exhibited an amorphous structure. The addition of Si not only resulted in the smoothening of the granular surfaces of the films but also led to the formation of round projections having a diameter of about 200 nm on the surfaces. Most of the Si in the films reacted with carbon, and no precipitation of SiC or Si phases was noticed in the films.
