Background: Type 2 diabetes has grown rapidly in Indonesia, particularly in South Sulawesi Province. It caused the negative impact not only on the physical but also the economic and psychological aspect. To overcome type 2 diabetes, the role of self-care performance on glycemic control was reported. However, the factors contribute on the self-care performance remain unclear. Purposes: To investigate the mediated effect of depression and perceived behavioral control on the relationship between diabetes knowledge and self-care performance. Research Method : A cross-sectional study with was conducted between July and August 2017 among 185 diabetes outpatients in 2 teaching hospitals and Public Health Services in Makassar City. All enrolled participants completed the self-reported questionnaires comprising the Depression Scale of Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS), the Revised Diabetes Knowledge Test (DKT2), Perceived Behavioral Control and the Self-Care Inventory-revised (SCI-R). The multiple linear regression was used to analyze the mediation effect based on the principle of the Baron and Kenny (1986). Further, the mediation effect was analyzed by using Sobel Test Results: The depression plays a full mediator on the relationship between the diabetes knowledge and self-care performance (ß = -.423, p < .001) and the effect of the mediation was 4.370 (p < .001). On the other hand, the perceived behavioral control is not a mediator, however, perceived behavioral control is a strongest predictor on the self-care performance (ß = .459, p < .001). Conclusion: The depression is a full mediator on the relationship between diabetes knowledge and self-care performance. Perceived behavioral control is not a mediator but it is the strongest predictor on the self-care performance. Healthcare professional may develop the intervention to assist the patient with depression to improve knowledge as well as self-care performance. Conversely, the intervention for patients with low perceived behavioral control is also needed to enhance self-care performance.系所名稱:護理學系碩士暨碩士在職專班憂鬱程度和自覺行為控制對第二型糖尿病患者知識與自我照護的影響Analysis of the Mediated Effect of Depression and Perceived Behavioral Control on the Relationship between Diabetes Knowledge and Self-Care Performance among Type 2 Diabetes Patients in Makassar, Indonesiathesis
