These infants are at high risk for many complications. Nurses should be aware of the influences on neonates of maternal opium addiction during pregnancy. This article discusses clinical manifestations of neonatal opiate abstinence syndrome, common assessment tools for neonatal abstinence syndrome, and a variety of medical treatments and nursing interventions.
