TB ranks as the second leading cause of death from an infectious disease worldwide. Estimates were 9.0 million new TB cases in 2013 and 1.5 million TB deaths reported by WHO Global TB Report, 2014. The main objective of the study is to assess the practices and availability of infection control measures of TB transmission to health-care workers at hospital settings in Swaziland. Methods This is a cross sectional study conducted between July and September 2014 at three institutions in the Manzini region, including the National TB Hospital, Raleigh Fitkin Memorial Hospital, and the Southern Africa Nazarene University. Health-care workers (HCWs) were enrolled into this study by answering a questionnaire with an informed consent. The Scientific and Ethics Committee for Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in Swaziland granted the permission for this study. Data is being analyzed using the SPSS version 20.0. Frequency table and chi-square tests analysis are used to analyze the data. A critical level of p=0.05 was used to assess the significance. A multivariate logistic regression model was used to analyze the perceived risk of having TB at work. Results Response rate was 72.94%, including 97 participants from the National TB Hospital and 89 participants from non-TB facility. HCWs at the National TB Hospital perceived a better infection control measures than those in non-TB facility. In specific, administrative controls (infection control plan, training for health-care workers), environmental controls (designated area for sputum collection/induction, air cleaning), and respiratory protection measures (available N95 mask, available detergent, and wear of protective gown) were better at the National TB Hospital than non-TB facility. In addition, HCWs at the National TB Hospital less often claimed a risk of developing TB at work than those in non-TB facility (p=0.01). When comparing with medical doctors, nurses (OR=51.7, 95% CI=4.16~642) and the other professionals (OR=63.8, 95% CI=6.31~645) more often claimed a risk of developing TB at work by the multivariate logistic regression analysis. Conclusions The National TB Hospital carried better capacity in TB infection control. The results suggest HCWs at the National TB Hospital carry lower risk of TB contamination. Our data imply that infection control measures can reduce TB infection of HCWs. This study has provided helpful insights in how HCWs perceived in infection control measures and practices.系所名稱:全球衛生暨發展碩士學位學程Assessment of the practices and availability of infection controlAssessment of the practices and availability of infection control measures on TB transmission among health-care workers in Manzini, Swazilandthesis
